Bret McKenzie is no stranger to the red carpet these days, and he was impressed by the glitz laid on at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington last night for the New Zealand premiere of Good For Nothing.
"Everyone's looking very comfortable doing this red-carpet thing," he said. "This is very similar to the Oscars really. Except there were no hay bales at the Oscars."
The Academy Award winner was among a host of local and international celebrities last night walking the red carpet, which was lined with hay bales in keeping with the spaghetti western theme of the movie.
Good for Nothing is the directorial debut of Kiwi Mike Wallis, who has worked alongside Sir Peter Jackson on The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, and Tintin in the animation department at Weta Digital.
It is understood to be the first western shot in this country and McKenzie said it was great to see film-makers here giving the genre a go. "It could be a new thing - the next Lord of the Rings maybe."
McKenzie said he was enjoying being home in Wellington after soaking up the bright lights of Hollywood at the Academy Awards in February, where he won for Best Original Song.
He was tight-lipped about his future projects, except to say he could not wait to hit the road with his Flight of the Conchords co-star Jemaine Clement in June and reinvigorate the comedy that shot the pair to stardom.
Many of the stars involved in The Hobbit, including British actors Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis, were at the premiere.
Serkis said there was a really great energy among the cast and crew of The Hobbit.
"We're right in the heart of it now, right in the belly of the beast. We're scheduled to finish [filming] in July so there's a light at the end of the tunnel now."
Good For Nothing opens in New Zealand on May 3.
