King Homeboy out of beatboxing world champs

Cuba St beatboxer King Homeboy has expressed his disappointment after being eliminated in the first round of the World Beatbox Championships in Berlin.

The musician, who regularly busks in Cuba St on weekends, qualified for the world champs last October after proving his years of success on the New Zealand beatbox scene earned him a spot among the world's best.

But on Sunday the 29-year-old took to his Facebook page to share the bad news with his fans after being eliminated over the weekend.

"I was going to rant and rave about things but I'm tired, so I'm going to tell you guys nice and sweet before I go to sleep. Eliminated in the first round of the world beatbox champs...f***** off about that, wish I could have done better."

Homeboy, who describes his beatboxing style as "vocal kung fu", said he felt like he had let everyone down but was excited about the impact he made on the world scene.

"I still gave autographs, posed for pictures, gave interviews and was remembered for being the only beatboxer to dress in a costume."

The beatboxer - real name Paul Teariki Toki - fundraised $5000 through his Facebook page to get to the third annual competition in Berlin, Germany, where he competed against 74 other beatboxers from around the globe.

With the competition now behind him, he planned to travel Germany doing gigs before returning to New Zealand at the end of April.

His goals were to lose weight, work harder on his beatboxing, do more gigs and break his world record for continuous beatboxing, which he set in 2009 with a total of 35 hours.
