Jessica Simpson gives birth to a girl

Jessica Simpson says she's "elated" to have finally given birth to her daughter.

The 31-year-old fashion mogul and fiance Eric Johnson welcomed Maxwell Drew Johnson in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.

Simpson, who was nearly 10 days overdue, revealed the happy news on her website and said her baby weighed in at a very healthy size.

"Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby Maxwell Drew Johnson 9lbs. 13oz (4.45kg) ," Jessica said of the birth weight and length.

"We are so grateful for all of the love, support and prayers we have received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives!"

Maxwell's middle name comes from Jessica's mother Tina, whose maiden name is Drew.

Simpson and Eric, 32, got engaged in November 2010 after just six months of dating. They have not set a wedding date yet as they were waiting until after their first child was born.

Simpson rose to fame as a teen pop star and became a household name after starring in a TV reality show with then new husband Nick Lachey, a member of the boy band 98 Degrees. The pair divorced after three years of marriage.

She went on to star in the 2005 film version of The Dukes of Hazzard and re-invented herself as a country singer in 2008. She currently designs clothes, accessories and other fashion products and is a mentor on the TV contest Fashion Star.
